Implantology Groningen is a small-scale referral practice for dental implantology. We aim to deliver personalized care and take ample time for consultation and treatment. We listen to the patient’s wishes and make an individual and clear treatment plan. Implantology Groningen works according to techniques that are evidence based and exclusively with “A-brand” implants by Straumann. We maintain short lines with dentists who refer patients to our clinic, so that the follow-up treatment runs smoothly.
Implantology Groningen is located at 11a Stationsstraat in a truly monumental house, built in 1881. The clinic has been renovated in 2020 where all applicable hygiene and quality requirements were met.
The implants are placed by Laurens den Hartog (DMD, PhD). He obtained his dental degree at the University of Groningen in 2004. He specialized in implantology at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). In 2011, he finished a PhD-thesis related to dental implants and completed a three-year training program to become an implantologist. Until 2017, he worked at the UMCG and was involved in patient care, research and education. Nowadays, he has his own referral practice for implantology.
Laurens den Hartog was secretary of the board of the Dutch Society of Dental Implantology (‘NVOI’) during 2009-2015. He has been an implantologist recognized by the NVOI since 2011 and Fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI) since 2015.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is an artificial root that is placed in the jaw bone. An implant looks like a screw and is made of titanium, a body-friendly material (jaw)bone can grow against. The implant provides support for a crown, bridge or denture.
How does it work?
For your implants, your dentist or dental prosthetist will refer you to Implantologie Groningen. If you don’t have a dentist who can refer you to our clinic, we are always willing to help you find one. Below you will find a short description of the procedure, so you know what to expect.
First consultation
During the first consultation we will ask you what teeth or dental problems you are dealing with and ask about your general health condition. Then we will examine if there is enough space and bone for a dental implant. An X-ray will be taken if no recent photo is available. Subsequently we will make a plan of treatment and inform you about the costs of the treatment by means of a budget. If applicable, you can check what the reimbursement will be in the policy conditions of your health insurance. If you agree with the treatment plan, we will make the necessary follow-up appointments.
Placing the dental implant
Dental implants are placed under local anaesthesia. The gum is pushed aside to reveal the bone. Then a hole is drilled in the bone according to the size of the implant. The implant is screwed into this hole. After the implant is placed, a healing cap is screwed on the implant and the gums are sutured. You will be instructed on how to take care of the wound. After a week you will return to Implantologie Groningen for a check-up.
After 6 to 12 weeks, the implant has grown into the bone and your dentist or dental prosthetist can start with the next phase.
Treatment by your own dentist or dental prosthetist
After the implant is placed, Implantologie Groningen will inform your dentist or dental prosthetist. Your dentist or dental prosthetist will then make appointments in order to make the crown, bridge or denture.
In consultation with your dentist, it is possible that the crown or bridge is made at our clinic.
Aftercare
The implants should be checked by a dentist or dental hygienist at least once a year.
